OUR STORY

Why Cairo Amplified Exists

Cairo Amplified started with my son, Cairo.

Cairo was autistic and lived with social anxiety. Like many young people who find social situations difficult, finding somewhere he felt comfortable and where he could really be himself wasn't always easy.

But he loved music.

Music was a huge part of who Cairo was. It gave him something he connected with, something he could lose himself in and something that brought him joy.

We lost Cairo to suicide when he was 17.

After losing him, I knew I wanted to create something positive in his name.

Over time, that became Cairo Amplified.

I wanted to create the kind of space I wish more young people had access to, somewhere they don't have to be confident when they walk through the door, don't have to already know anyone and don't have to be brilliant at something to belong.

And it didn't make sense for that opportunity to only be for young people who could already play an instrument or wanted to perform.

There is a whole world behind live music too.

There are people running sound, creating lighting, taking photographs, making content, organising backstage and doing all the things that turn a group of musicians on a stage into a live event.

That's why Cairo Amplified gives young people different ways to be involved.

Some might want to join a band and perform. Others might discover that they're much happier behind a mixing desk, holding a camera, working with lighting or helping backstage.

For some, the biggest achievement might simply be turning up, finding people with similar interests and gradually feeling comfortable enough to get involved.

Cairo Amplified is a place for music, creativity, learning and connection.

A place where young people can try something new without judgement, build confidence at their own pace and hopefully find somewhere they feel they belong.

That's what I want Cairo Amplified to be.

The RPG Pianist

Music was a huge part of Cairo’s life.

He played piano and shared his music on YouTube as The RPG Pianist, where he performed piano covers of music from anime and video games. He also performed at anime and comic conventions and won awards for his playing.

His love of music is a big part of the inspiration behind Cairo Amplified, so it feels only right to share a little bit of his music here.
